ID card requirements
In California, a single, valid, government-issued photo ID is generally sufficient for notarization. Acceptable forms include California driver’s licenses or ID cards, U.S. passports (including passport cards), and driver’s licenses from other states or Mexico and Canada.
Forms of ID Generally Accepted:
- California Driver’s License or ID Card: Issued by the California DMV.
- U.S. Passport or Passport Card: Both are valid forms of identification.
- Driver’s Licenses from Other States: Must be valid and current.
- Driver’s Licenses from Mexico or Canada: Must be issued by an authorized public agency.
- Foreign Passports: Must be current and may require additional verification.
Important Considerations:
Validity:
- IDs must be current or issued within the past five years.
Completeness:
- IDs must include a photo, physical description, signature, and identification number.
Notarization Process:
- The signer must personally appear before the notary, and the notary must witness the signature.
